Time is one of the greatest gifts we can give to children, and what better way to use it than by sharing books and showing them that reading can be fun. To support in any of our one-to-one programmes you'll need to make a regular weekly commitment, but if you can't do that you can help us in other ways.

Reading Helper - Primary School

Reading Helpers are adult volunteers living or working within a 5 mile radius of a school that has asked for our help. You need to commit to at least an afternoon a week for a whole year during term-time, and as we invest in your training we'd appreciate it if you could stay longer.

The role isn't about listening to children read, but creating a relaxed session that allows children to work alongside you to discover the joy of books.

Reading Leader - Secondary School

Reading Leaders are part of a group of 13-17 year old pupils who are trained as a school group by Coram Beanstalk to run one-to-one reading sessions for their peers in Years 7 or 8.

It's a programme that needs the school to commit to the selection and training of 14 - 20 older students, with a member of the school staff taking responsibility for the ongoing coordination of the programme.

Corporate Volunteer

We really appreciate it when businesses offer their help to support us, however to involve people in schools we need a longer-term partnership and commitment.

If you can offer short-term help, please consider joining in with our fundraising activities, or take part in an outreach day to spread the word about what we do.

We can also offer online sessions to help your staff feel more confident in encouraging their own children to become readers.

Other ways to help

We need three things to enable us to create readers:

  • Volunteers
  • Partner schools
  • Donations
If you can help us to attract people who can volunteer, make schools aware of our service, or support our fundraising efforts you will be helping us. Please do get in touch if you've got any ideas to support us, or if you are able, please donate today or consider leaving a legacy to help the children of tomorrow.

"Our reading volunteers are amazing, they are reliable and so dedicated. Our children, who benefit from working with them, love the time they get to have reading and talking with them. For some of our children this is an experience they only get in school. We value them so highly."
