Volunteering Reading 321 - apply to volunteer in a primary school Important message about COVID-19: Thank you for visiting this page to find out more about becoming a reading helper with Coram Beanstalk. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the temporary closure of schools, our volunteers are currently unable to carry out their reading sessions as usual. However, we are still processing volunteer applications and encourage anyone interested in becoming a reading helper to apply as normal by completing the form below. We are using this time to explore ways in which we can provide on-going training for our volunteers and vital reading support to children who continue to need this. We may, therefore, get back in touch with you before schools re-open if there are feasible options to provide this remotely. As a Reading 321 reading helper you'll be placed in a local primary school to help three children, aged between 5-11, twice a week, for at least one academic year (three terms, starting at any time of the year). With your support, you'll help them improve their reading ability, confidence and learn to love reading. Read the Coram Beanstalk Reading 321 Role Description It's a rewarding experience: Our most popular and longest-running volunteering opportunity, with thousands of people taking part each year 88% of people say it makes them feel more mentally active You'll take on a new challenge and develop new skills You'll change a child's life, giving them the skills and confidence they need to succeed in life Most of all, you'll have fun! You'll make a lasting difference: You'll read, play and talk to open up a child’s imagination and help them discover the magic of reading You'll help three children aged 5-11 succeed at school You'll become part of your local community and give something back What's involved: You'll engage with primary school age children in a fun and positive way You'll adapt each session to the child, seeing for yourself how they progress You'll volunteer for 90 minutes, twice a week, in a school near you for 30 weeks - during school hours on separate days so you'll need to be able to spare a couple of mornings or afternoons a week for that length of time. It's the consistency and regularity of our support that makes all the difference! In some areas we may be able to offer a once a week volunteering opportunity, where you ‘buddy up’ with another volunteer who goes in on another day. If this might be of interest, mention it in the section about your availability in the form below.
