Apply to volunteer

We're active across England and Wales and are growing! If we're not yet working with a primary school within 5 miles of where you live, we'd love you to help us find one and bring our support to children in your community. Schools do pay a contribution to our service that is matched by fundraising. This charge is not for volunteer time, but covers the costs incurred by the charity to, among other things, deliver training, resources and ongoing support to our volunteers.

There are a few things we need to be sure you're ok with before you apply. Can you answer 'yes' to the following questions?

Are you able to:

  • Be open to learning and delivering our approach to help children become readers?
  • Give your ongoing commitment and dedication to the charity and the children we support for at least a year?
  • Travel to one of our partner primary schools for a few hours each week during their afternoon sessions?
  • Use a PC/laptop/tablet to access our interactive, live training sessions via Zoom?
  • Read and understand English-language children's books to effectively support reading activities?
  • Supply appropriate ID documents* to complete a Digital ID check, and sign up to the update service?
  • Regularly access your email** to receive and respond to communications from us?

*Including a valid passport issued after January 2016, for a full list of documents accepted please see information on the DBS website here if you do not have the necessary documents we will be unable to process your application.

**If you do apply please check your spam/junk email folders as we get sad when we end up in there and you feel we've not answered you!
