Families and relationships

Maya's Storm explores several themes but perhaps the most prominent is that of finding your place within a new family.  We don't know where Maya has come from but we do know that she is living with a new family and learning to speak English.  As author Maria Farrer explains in her interview, Maya's box of memories helps her feel like she belongs.

Children need to be able to see their lives and families reflected in the books they read to feel connected.  And it’s equally important for them to read books that widen their understanding of how others live too. These books all share a common thread – families come in all shapes and sizes.
