Schools Reading Role Models We partner struggling and reluctant readers with a trained volunteer from a local post-16 setting. Each Beanstalk Reading Role Model supports two children, once a week. Together they will read and talk to engage a child struggling with their reading and confidence. Each volunteer provides 30 minutes of one-to-one support in each session, a total of one hour per week. Beanstalk Reading Role Models brings benefits to primary schools and post-16 settings. Primary schools Pairing a child with someone who is nearer their own age, has a big impact in transforming their reading ability and confidence. Beanstalk takes care of all recruitment, vetting and support. The school's contribution is £50 per child per term. Post-16 settings It's the perfect opportunity for 16-18 year olds interested in developing skills in education and demonstrating extra-curricular commitment for UCAS and job applications. As an Approved Activity Provider for the Duke of Edinburgh Award it counts towards any DofE programme students are working towards – which is great for UCAS! Each volunteer receives: Professional in-school training. Ongoing support with a volunteer mentor. Full selection of reading resources to use in sessions. A certificate at the end of year for use in university and job applications. There is no cost at all for post-16 settings involved with Beanstalk Reading Role Models We found that our children really responded to their Beanstalk Reading Role Models, more so than other adults they work with in the school. Adam Robbins, Assistant Head, Primary Alibon Primary School This is an amazing experience, especially to gain first hand at only 16, because it has not only given me something to work towards but has given me an incredible challenge of trying to help a child just like myself when I was that age.
