About Beanstalk 

“There’s not much you can do if you can’t read is there?”  (7-year old boy from NE England, Kids Family Reading Report, Scholastic 2015) In the UK today 5.1 million adults do not have the reading skills expected of the average 11 year old.  Beanstalk is a national children’s literacy charity that believes that every child should grow up with the essential skills they need to read, grow and thrive. 
We recruit, train and support volunteers to provide consistent, one-to-one literacy support to nursery and primary school children who need our help. Our trained reading helpers give them the support they need to improve their reading ability and confidence.

About the role

We are looking to recruit a Beanstalk Coordinator to join our Yorkshire service delivery team.

Beanstalk Coordinators are the local face of the charity; responsible for ensuring and maintaining a positive relationship between Beanstalk, volunteers and our settings in the local community. 

We are looking for a passionate self-starter to support our trained reading helpers in schools and manage the smooth running of their volunteer journey and experience. 

Key Information

Hours: 21 hours per week, preferably to be worked over 3 days 

Location: This role will cover Sheffield/Rotherham/Doncaster/Barnsley/Wakefield/Kirklees. Remote worker with occasional travel to the Bradford office. 

Transport: Able to drive and use own vehicle for work (mileage expenses paid) 

Salary: FTE £17,000 per annum. Actual £10,200 per annum / £9.34 per hour

Proposed start date: October 2018 

The ideal candidate

You will be a self-starter who is passionate about helping our volunteers in their role to inspire and motivate children who are struggling with their reading. The right person will be confident talking to leaders in educational settings to help them get the best experience of the Beanstalk programmes.

The post holder is responsible for the placement of volunteers in education settings, checking progress and providing ongoing support. 

The Coordinator will support awareness raising activity in their local area; volunteer and school recruitment; attend events and promote the benefits of supporting Beanstalk. 

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in volunteer co-ordination or similar, be interested in education, and confident in managing external relationships.

  • Efficient diary management, the ability to work to tight deadlines and to perform well under pressure
  • Ability to implement safeguarding, child protection and good practice
