Story StartersLife is better when everyone can read well and express themselves with confidence. Story Starters is a new programme that gives children aged three to five years old the language and communication skills they need to start school ready to learn and all set to reach for the stars. Story Starters was made possible by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. We received £1 million from the People’s Postcode Lottery Dream Fund to deliver Story Starters from January 2017 through to March 2019. Due to it's success the programme continues to be delivered to settings across England. This was the start of Story Starters, a collaborative project between Beanstalk, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and LuCiD (The ESRC International Centre for Language and Communicative Development). Story Starters places volunteers in educational settings to work with children aged 3-5 to help them learn vital skills that will enable them to start primary school ready to read. To celebrate the first year of Story Starters, there is a short video which studies the successes of this project. Ginny Lunn talks about the success of the project '...since we won the Dream Fund, it's been an amazing year...we had a massive response from nurseries'. These books will be sent directly to both the early years setting and the home of each Story Starter child, ensuring that they can enjoy the magic of stories at home as well as when they are with their Story Starter. LuCiD (www.lucid.ac.uk) is a project based at the University of Liverpool to help transform our understanding of how children learn through language and communication. They will be carrying out the Randomised Control Trial (RCT) on the intervention and will be reporting findings at the end of the two year period of project delivery.
